Caption: Young
girl posing beside a tree.
Technical data: Photo taken with a Nikon SLR film camera and Nikkor
85mm f1.8 lens; hand held, available light with auto fill-flash, two
stops minus flash exposure adjustment. Approximate exposure in manual
mode 1/250 second at f8.0 - Fuji Sensia 100 transparency film. No lens
filters were used.
Film was scanned using Minolta
Dimage series film scanner. Photo file was routinely optimized using
Photoshop; levels and curves, color balance, sharpening, cropping and
dust spot removal using clone tool. I use a Mac for all photo
processing.

Comments: I initially posed this young girl along a riverside,
then under a shelter to escape the pitiless sun. Nothing was working
out. Her skin was very light and looked mottled in the shade but too
blown out in the bright sun. A nearly grove of Gumbo Limbo trees was
perfect. The lighting was direct but muted nicely by the tree cover -
her skin showed its natural creamy glow. The only problem was the dark
shadow on her right side caused by the tree trunks.
To open up that shadow area I
simply used a little fill-flash but adjusted it down two stops (minus
compensation) so the flash would hardly be noticed. The result was a
very natural looking picture with beautiful natural lighting. The flash
opened up the shadow area just enough but didn't ruin the primary
natural light.
